The kestrel is a familiar bird of prey, and our most common falcon. This small raptor is often seen hovering skilfully over roadside verges or fields where is hunts for small rodents, which it can spot from 200 feet above the ground. Male and female birds have similar markings – brown with dark speckles (darker on the back than front). Males have blue-grey head.
When to see: all year round
Where to see: throughout Scotland, regularly seen hovering by the side of roads.
